I am Mark Dyer, I am 2Spirit, and I'm a full time artist. I draw my inspiration from the beauty of nature and the complexity of human emotions. I use a variety of mediums to create what I hope are interesting and thought provoking pieces of art through my constant exploration of the human psyche and a celebration of the world around us. While I work in a variety of different mediums, which include printmaking, ceramics, sculpting, my first love is oil painting.
I've had a lifelong passion for art and creating that began in my childhood, and abstract art became my own language in which I could express my sexuality safely. As an adult, I pursued an education and a career in creative arts. As an artist I am constantly pushing the boundaries and experimenting with new techniques to convey my ideas and my work which is a fusion of my undergraduate traditional style work, the contemporary styles of my graduate work and reflecting my creativity as a child playing with lines, shapes and colors.
My endless curiosity of exploring the nature of art and my personal growth as an artist, has evolved into the development of my own personal style which I call Fluidism. Ive always loved natural fluid movements, like the way water flow, the wind moves trees and clouds, the warmest the moon moves the waves. The way the human form flows. So my work is a reflection of the fluidity that surrounds us. Fluidism, creating positive and negative shapes that exchange placed as they move from background to foreground, helping move the eyes around the work
I also prefer creating artwork that features and celebrates members of the 2SLGBTQIA community, and I use a low vantage point in my compositions, that looks up at the model with the intention to force the viewer to look up at the figures, regardless of their personal opinions. By doing so, I am able to give 2SLGBTQIA individuals a sense of admiration, power and authority in my artwork, as they are always depicted as being above the viewer, never below them.
Creativity and Advocating for the 2SLGBTQIA community will always play a major role in my life.
